Stern Honored With Ruminant Animal Nutrition Award
ARLINGTON, VA., July 10, 2008 – Dr. Marshall D. Stern, Ph.D., an expert on how ruminant animals such as cattle digest proteins, was recognized for his professional achievements by the American Society of Animal Science this week. Stern is a professor of animal nutrition at the University of Minnesota.
The Ruminant Nutrition Research Award was presented to Stern during a ceremony in Indianapolis, Ind., on July 8. The award is sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association, as part of its continuing awards program that dates to 1948.
Stern’s primary research objective has been improving the efficiency of protein utilization by ruminants. He has developed new technologies and procedures, including the development of a dual-flow continuous culture fermentation system or artificial rumen. Stern’s research using duodenally cannulated lactating cows was the first using this type of surgically prepared animal in the United States.
Stern subsequently developed an in vitro procedure for estimating intestinal protein digestion to alleviate use of intestinally cannulated cows. His research has contributed extensively to understanding and applying concepts that regulate carbohydrate and protein degradation in the rumen and digestion in the small intestine.
The significance of Stern’s contributions is clear, given the numerous citations of his research in the proteins and amino acids section of the 2001 National Research Council publication on the nutrient requirements of dairy cattle. He also is the author or co-author of 84 refereed journal articles, 47 proceedings articles, one book chapter and 134 abstracts.
Stern received degrees from Cornell University and the University of Rhode Island, and he earned his doctoral degree from the University of Maine. He conducted post-doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin and joined the University of Minnesota faculty in 1981.
Dr. Jonathan Goodson of Evonik Industries presented the award to Stern.
