A visit to the food aisle in a pet store can be a confusing experience for pet owners trying to make the best choices for their pet’s diets. Hundreds of options are available for all life stages, sizes and even breeds of dogs and cats. Ingredient choices of natural, vegan, vegetarian and human-grade further add to the difficulty of choosing a food.
My husband and I enjoy watching “Saturday Night Live,” and often, when we can watch it live on Saturday nights, we’re still chuckling about the jokes on Sunday mornings during church (oops!). When I saw that a newfound favorite comedian of mine, Nate Bargatze, and musical guest Foo Fighters, yet another favorite, were headlining Oct. 28, I had to tune in. Just minutes before the show ended, SNL aired a spoof about eating dog food, which moved me to belly laughs.
Anyone with a lazy cat or dog will know what I’m talking about. You come home from work, tired after a long day, and your pet has been snoozing all day. “What a rough life,” you might say. Or, “Where’s the rent? Get a job!” All in good humor, of course. In fairness, a lot of animals have jobs and serve important purposes (although, they still may not cover the rent or treats).
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) wrapped up its 15th annual Pet Food Conference (PFC) yesterday, informing nearly 300 pet food professionals of the latest news within this growing industry and providing tips for how to face upcoming challenges. The daylong conference also included the announcement of two Friend of Pet Food Award winners.
Congratulations to this year's AFIA Friend of Pet Food Award winners - George Fahey, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UI) and Dennis Jewell, Ph.D., formerly of Hill's Pet Nutrition.
Like the rest of America, I was sad to hear the news of Betty White’s passing on New Year’s Eve, a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday, which would have been today. She has always held a special place in my heart – not only because she shares a Jan. 17 birthday with my grandma (who is turning 96 today!!), but because she always put a smile on people’s faces and used her talents for service of others, including some four-legged creatures.
