The American Feed Industry Association hails the Food and Drug Administration’s announcement yesterday to extend its deadlines and inspection timeframes for when certain-sized facilities should come into compliance with some Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) rules and regulations. By extending the deadlines, the FDA will have more time to release the final FSMA guidance documents and train its inspectors, while the regulated animal food industry will have greater opportunity to perform the necessary retrofits to animal food safety plans and processes to ensure full compliance with federal regulations.
The American Feed Industry Association commends Congress for sending a bill to the president this week for signature — the Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Amendments of 2018 (H.R. 5554). This bipartisan legislation will continue providing the necessary resources to support the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine with completing more expeditious reviews of new animal drugs and improving FDA’s review and approval process for animal food ingredients.

The 38-page comments affirm the animal food industry’s commitment to a “full and successful implementation of FSMA” across its varied industries but urges the agency to take a flexible approach when regulating under this rule.
